LG Optimus L9 Review : A Great Phone With Average Camera and Poor Battery

LG Optimus L9 is the newest smartphone of LG Optimus L series. The LG Optimus L9 is said to be the replacement for LG Optimus L7.

LG Optimus L9 has the same design as LG Optimus L7, even the button layout is the same. It is black and a chrome trim with Gorilla Glass covering the front side. It has physical home button with menu and back capacitive keys.  The back side has a texture matte finish, with multiple small dots.

The LG Optimus L9 has a 4.5 inches qHD TFT LCD with 960 x 540 resolutions. It has good viewing angles with sharp text and rich colors. Even under sun light the display is usable but you would have to turn the brightness up to 100 percent. Sadly the lack of a light sensor means that you would have to adjust the level of brightness each time the lighting conditions change.

Above the display you will find a front facing video call VGA camera and a T-Mobile branding. The power button is on the right side and on the left is the volume rocker. The 3.5mm headphones jack is on the top. On the back is a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash. On the lower end of the back side you will see a small opening for external speaker. On the bottom you will find the micro USB port. The micro SD and SIM card slot can be found under the back cover.

LG Optimus L9 is powered by dual core 1GHZ TI OMAP 4430 with a Power VR SGX 450 GPU. The processor is out dated as it used in last year’s smart phones. Even though the processor is out dated, it still has good performance. Opening, closing and switch apps is fast, zooming in and out on a web page is smooth but it has a bit of a lag when rendering images. It takes about 21 seconds for the smart phone to fully boot up.

The battery of LG Optimus L9 will last a little more than five hours, with nonstop video play back while having Wi-Fi enabled, which seems a bit poor. With normal usage you would be able to squeeze out about nine hours of battery life.

Software and Camera

LG Optimus L9 runs on skinned version of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The overlay skin is seen on most LG smart phones. The skin is known as UI 3.0, this skin is quite light compared to other Android skins. For example the lock screen allows you to swipe in any direction unlock. It also gives access to four customizable apps.

The Quick Setting menu is now in the notification drawer on LG Optimus L9. You can adjust different settings by simply swiping your fingers, settings like sound, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS. You can also add a toggle for brightness in the Quick Setting menu. This is quite useful as the phone lacks an auto brightness sensor.

The default on screen keyboard of LG Optimus L9 is almost the same as Swype. On which you form words by swiping your finger over the keys. This is all good if you’re used to Swpye but if you try to enter words the old fashioned way, the keyboard becomes quite choosy and vague. Sadly there is no way to switch back to the stock keyboard of Ice Cream Sandwich.

The LG Optimus L9 has the same Camera interface as most other LG smart phones, so if you have used other LG smart phones, the interface should look familiar to you. The controls on the left side allow to you adjust the scene mode, image size, ISO setting, timer, white balance, geo tagging setting, color effects and even shutter sound.

The 5 megapixel camera of LG Optimus L9 can record videos up to 1080p HD and the front facing video call camera maxes out VGA. The 1080p video is sharp and satisfactory while using auto focus, but it doesn’t handle shadows and low light very well. The still shots output is not impressive as the image quality is a bit low and colors are washed out.

To sum it all up, the LG Optimus L9 has a good design and a wonderful display but has a short battery life, an average camera and no brightness sensor. Even though this is a decent looking low budget smart phone, it’s not the best because there are still better options in the market.

MacBook Pro 2012 Review

The new MacBook Pro 2012 with 13 inch Retina display. It is almost the same as the 15 inch MacBook but with a 13 inch screen.

The MacBook Pro 13 inch has the same design as the Mac Book 15 inch but the 13 inch MacBook Pro is a bit slimmer. It is 8.62 inches deep and 12.35 inches wide. It weighs about 3.57 pounds but it is 20 percent thinner than the 15 inch version.

The hinges are made of black plastic. The bottom corners have four rubber feet, so that the 13 inch MacBook Pro does not slide across your lap or your desk. The keyboard back lighting can be adjusted according to your liking. The keys are more responsive and a bit deeper than the older version which makes typing comfortable and easy.

The port arrangement is the same as the 15 inch version; on the left side is the new MagSafe 2 connector, headphones jack, dual Thunderbolt ports and a 3.0 USB port. On the right you will find another 3.0 USB port, built in SDXC reader and a full size HDMI output. Same as the 15 inch version there is not optical drive or an Ethernet port. The speakers are now under the keyboard and have good sound quality.

Display and Performance

The MacBook Pro with Retina display has 13 inch screen with 2560 x 1600 resolutions.  The viewing angles are good and the colors are balanced. The apps don’t run on full screen resolution but you can use the default setting in Mountain Lion blowing app to run apps on full resolution. It seems that to fully make use of the Retina display of Mac Book Pro 13 inch you would have to optimize all yours apps.

MacBook Pro 13 inch with Retina display is powered by a 2.5 GHZ Core i5 Intel paired processor, 8 GB of DDR3 RAM with 128 GB SSD and Intel HD Graphic 4000. It is the same setup offered by a 13 inch non Retina Mac Book. For normal usage the MacBook Pro 13 inch with Retina display gives the same performance as the 15 inch version.

Apply says that the battery will last for at least 7 hours. With nonstop video play back the battery of Mac Book Pro 13 inch with Retina display will last for a little over 6 hours. It would have been better if Apply had improved the battery life as they did with the 15 inch version.

To sum it all up, MacBook Pro 13 inch with Retina display is perfectly manufactured and engineered. It seems like it’s a smaller and thicker copy of the 15 inch version. It would have been good to see something new and different.

Should I Buy A Refurbished Iphone

iphone_3gs_16gb_black_frontThe iPhone is one of the most amazing gadgets available in the electronic market. iPhones have revolutionized the mobile phone history. They are one of the leading mobile phones. With so much to offer to its users, the iPhone has everything a user can dream of. It is the best selling phone in the US. However, there are still a lot of people who cannot afford to buy the iPhone due to its hefty price. So it seems that a person, who really wants to buy an iPhone but can’t afford it, has only two options: 1. Buy iPhone 2. Let it go. However that’s not true. There is a third option as well to buy a refurbished iPhone.

Should I buy a refurbished iPhone:

Refurbished iPhones are good enough to buy, but obviously they are not the same as the iPhones.  Keep the following points in mind before buying a refurbished iPhone:

  1. Battery: iPhones come with weak battery lives. Apple also doesn’t allow a user to replace the battery. If the refurbished iPhone you are getting has a battery older than a year, ask the retailer to replace the battery or think to drop the idea of buying the refurbished iPhone.
  2. Screen: If the screen of the iPhone contains a lot of scratches, ask your retailer to show another iPhone. Because iPhone completely works on touch screen strategy and an iPhone with a lot of scratches on the screen may start doing problems after a while.
  3. Capacity: Be sure to check the capacity of the iPhone before pulling out all of your savings. The iPhone may be of older model offering only 4GB and you may need more than this. Hence, it will become an obstacle in your fun and entertainment and you won’t be able to maintain as large itune library as you want.
  4. Features: Carefully check all the features that your refurbished iPhone is offering. You may lose an upgraded camera or the ability to record or edit video or anything else if you are not careful in checking the features. Don’t give your hard earned money for something you won’t like in the end.
  5. Price: The most important aspect to consider while buying a refurbished iPhone is the “price”. The refurbished iPhone may be $100 cheaper, but the question would be: is it worth it? If the iPhone has a battery older than a year and a screen with scratches, it is definitely not worth it.
  6. Warranty: If your refurbished iPhone is still on a warranty, buy it because it will help you a lot in recovering from interruptions, mishaps and accidental damages. Even if your phone is on an extended warranty, it’s not a problem. A phone that has once been repaired in the past may not be a problem in the future.
  7. Contract: The iPhones are on a two year contract when bought. Check out if your iPhone is still on a contract. If it’s not, how much will it cost you to get a new contract. The price may seem to be small, but be careful. It may add up to become larger than the price of the iPhone with time.

Recycling Your Old Mobile Phone

mobile_phones_old_and_newWith new mobile phones coming on the market at a rapid rate, and with each new generation of phone beating the previous one by leaps and bounds in terms of performance, the fact that the latest contract phones are being handed out either for free or at least for a fraction of their real prices along with a number of new and innovative phone deals that have become available, it is hardly surprising that mobile phones have short lifetimes. So what happens to them when we no longer need them? Southampton University recently looked into the relationship between its students and their mobile phones, and this is what they discovered.

The lifecycle of mobile phones is surprisingly short, even given all of the above. Many phone users consider their phone to be obsolete within around a year of acquiring it. This is despite the fact that the phone is working perfectly well. Not only are these once-loved phones entirely reusable, they are also valuable in terms of the materials they are made of and many of their components. Taking into consideration the size and weight of the discarded phone and its intrinsic value, phones are the most valuable of all items that end up in waste disposal in large quantities.

The study next considered the number of students worldwide and the number of times that they replace their phones between joining a university and graduating. Just looking at the US, the UK and the rest of Europe there are nearly 40 million students and they replace their phones on average 3 times before they graduate; that is a lot of phones.

Five universities in the UK were selected for a detailed study into what happened to these phones that were no longer required. The study began by examining the reasons why students changed their phones so often and came up with a number of them. The major ones stated were: to replace a phone that had stopped working; upgrading the phone through the network provider; staying in fashion; finding a phone with a better battery life than the old one. Male students changed their phones more frequently than females.

Although around 40% of the discarded phones are returned for reuse or recycled, the remainder are kept by the students as a backup or additional phone which is rarely used. This stockpile of mainly unused phones is huge: around 62 million phones in the UK, US and rest of Europe. Although most mobile phone suppliers operate a take back service, very few students were aware of it and of those who were very few used it.

Even students who were quite happy to recycle paper, glass and other materials seemed quite oblivious to the environmental and economic benefits of recycling their phones. However students were incentivised to participate in phone take back services when a monetary award or voucher was offered for doing so.

So how many phones do you have lying in the back of a draw? Developing countries are crying out for them and, even if they no longer work, they are packed full of recyclable materials many of which might soon be in short supply, so do your duty: recycle your phone.

Delete Files that do not Go Away with FileExile

A woman's finger hovering over the delete key

Most Windows users are used to seeing files that they wish to delete but can not. You may find it difficult to delete files in an operating system for a number of reasons. The file may be in use and is therefore locked by the process that is using it, or it may have a very long path. Sometimes it could be confusing language characters that you are not able to understand.

When users find it difficult to remove files by pressing the delete key, they may use such tools as Free File Unlocker, IOBit or Unlocker to help them get rid of the file.

Another program that can be used to delete files which do not want to be removed is FileExile. After installing this program you will not find it in Windows Explorer’s context menu because it does not attach itself there. All the operations are carried out within the central program interface.

From this location you choose a file or folder that you wish to delete. Sadly, the file or folder that you intend to delete must be selected by using the browse button.

The program was successfully used to remove files that another process had locked. It was also used to delete files which had invalid names and the files that had very long file paths.

You should not be worried about mistakenly deleting important system folders such as windows or user directory because the program has an inbuilt safety device that will prevent that. If you want to be able to get rid of such files, you have to enable it by going to Settings and switching to advanced mode. Do not forget that if you delete certain important system files, your operating system may be rendered inoperative and it will no longer start.

If you want to know the activity that the program is carrying out as it is performing that activity, you can also go to Settings and enable the show out put option. Logging can also be enabled from this location.

One thing that developers should think of improving in coming editions is accessibility, because it is a huge concern for users. Dragging and dropping files into program windows is one feature that users would find very attractive. Also the program would be more appealing to users if it is better integrated with Widows Explorer. However it is still a very good option, particularly for people who find it difficult using the other tools to delete files which cannot be deleted easily.

Sparrow – A Great Email App for iPhone

Sparrow, the well-liked email client for Macintosh, recently launched its email app for iPhone. Apart from having a similar appearance to the usual desktop client, this app has some helpful features, which includes swipe control, a contact register that organizes your contacts intelligently, plus one or two features that can easily be recognized by individuals who have used the Mac edition.

Sparrow’s desktop edition is arguably the finest email client running on Macintosh OS X and the design of the mobile edition is very much like that of the desktop edition. The greater part of the application is controlled using swipe gestures rather than push buttons, it is able to import images of your Facebook contacts, and it lists the contacts you frequently deal with at the upper part of a list rather than listing them in alphabetical order. This is definitely its most helpful feature. This email app for iPhone also has a similar threaded discussion view just like the desktop client, its search engine is superb and it has a fast sender switch, plus a mark everything as read button – something people that use iPhone have been demanding for ever since the phone was initially introduced.

The iPhone edition of Sparrow has two major problems that cannot be ignored. To start with, POP email account is not supported. You should not bother about getting Sparrow, if your email server uses POP. Sparrow works well with AOL, Yahoo, iCloud and Gmail. The second issue is that push notifications is not supported by Sparrow. What this means is that your email must be checked manually and there is no way of letting you know when you receive a new message. You need to take this big missing aspect into consideration before checking out the this email app for iPhone. It will cost you $2.99 to get Sparrow at the iTunes Application Store.

How Windows Product Key can be recovered

windows-product-keyNo matter how careful you are, you can still lose your Windows product key, particularly if you accidentally lose the box that held the Windows CD when you purchased it. The first solution most people think about when they have this problem is to call Microsoft technical support for assistance, but such persons soon realize that the Microsoft is not prepared to give them any help in that regard. You might take the decision to buy another product key or even get a new Windows license, rather than wasting valuable time searching through different DVD/CD cases that you have accumulated over the years. Purchasing another Windows license would be a big mistake. Depending on the version of windows that runs on your computer, you can recover the product key by using the windows registry. This will work for all versions of Windows apart from Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Where has the Product Key Gone to?

The product key has always been stored within the registry right up to Windows XP. You will usually find it by following this path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESSOFTWAREWindowsProductsID. Sadly, this no longer applies since Windows Vista was created. It appears Microsoft did not want users to easily find their product key, so when any user loses one, he or she has to purchase another license. The use of Magic JellyBean KeyFinder will eliminate the need for you to purchase another product key. It is an app that will help you locate your Windows product key by searching through your Windows installation.

Another thing you should know is that Windows “ProductID” no longer displays the key; instead it displays a special identification that Microsoft uses to tell the difference between two Windows installations. They use this to stop 2 Windows installations from making use of Windows Update, because the company’s policy does not permit using a copy of Windows to install more than one PC.

Using KeyFinder

First, KeyFinder’s ZIP file should be downloaded using this link. After opening the ZIP, it should be extracted to a folder with a name that you can easily remember on your desktop or within your local hard disk. The folder should contain a file named “KeyFinder.exe” After you double click this file; a screen that resembles the one below will appear.

The screen above shows that it is possible to recover product keys of other programs installed on your PC, but that depends on whether such programs have a key. The product keys of certain applications are stored in a file inside their respective folders. If you are searching for the product key for that kind of program, your investigation may have to be a little deeper.

If you cannot locate your Windows product key manually, you can find it using handy apps like Magic JellyBean Keyfinder. If Keyfinder fails to work for you, another application that you will find helpful is Belarc Advisor. This app provides you with a complete audit of your PC but adds the product key also. If you still cannot locate your product key after you have tried everything, you can try calling Microsoft for help. You just might get lucky and get your product key replaced.

You should form the habit of backing up your license key as soon as you lay your hands on the DVD/CD. You can use your mobile phone to take a photograph of your license key and get the image uploaded to your Google+ account, or your Dropbox, so that anytime you want it, it will not be difficult to get it.

Your questions and comments will be most welcome.
